The project Hotel Element is located in Gateway Gardens near the Frankfurt airport in Germany. The project is a new construction with 133 hotel tenant rooms, meeting rooms, circulation spaces, and underground parking.
Baumann Consulting performed the energy model simulation for this project which achieved a 33% energy cost improvement compared to the baseline according to ASHRAE 90.1-2007 Appendix G. This was primarily achieved through the 90% reduction of heating energy of the design case compared to the baseline. The incorporated Energy Efficiency Measures (EEMs) included but are not limited to:
- High-quality envelope
- Efficient hydronic heating system for circulation spaces
- Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems for tenant heating and cooling
- Dedicated Outdoor Air (DOA) system with heat recovery
- Daylight control and occupancy sensors
Baumann’s commissioning activities verified thermal comfort requirements in the hotel rooms. The following issues were discovered during the commissioning and corrected:
- Hotel room temperature sensors were not accurately calibrated
- Incorrect display of values on Building Automation System (BAS) for example:
- Cooling coil units
- Heat recovery wheels “on” vs “off”
- Exhaust ventilation fan speed
