Baumann Consulting offers a rich internship experience no matter the position or location. As a Marketing Intern, I was able to collaborate with aspiring experts within the A/E/C industry. As someone who was not well versed in the industry, the Baumann team made an amazing effort to help ease the initial onboarding and helped teach me the fundamental principles and services that we provide. Within the first week of my internship, employees would reach out to schedule an introduction call to get to know me better and foster a friendly work relationship. At first, this was incredibly welcoming and ensured that I was in good hands. My tasks varied during my internship, and many opportunities presented themselves to help me grow in areas I was not initially comfortable with. However, as time went on, I realized I was developing instrumental skills that have helped me to this day.

During the first few months, I got a lot of exposure to the company’s different focus areas within the marketing department. Through managing the website, internal communications, and promotional marketing materials, I slowly gained a better understanding and appreciation for the work that Baumann provides. Many of the tasks at the beginning were essential materials that needed managing, such as employee and project information, website analytics, and content development. Eventually, as I became to understand and manage these tasks on my own, many other opportunities arose to expand my reach of responsibilities. One of the main responsibilities I gained was proposal writing and website development, as these are intricate and important tasks to take on within the company. This was the first assignment that opened many communication channels to internal committees and employees that I would have never collaborated with on a regular basis. At this point, the internship felt more attuned to an actual position within the company due to the integral part I was playing in the communication flow.

I was fortunate enough to work in the same office as the Baumann Consulting Marketing & Business Development Director. This allowed me to see a different side of the marketing field compared to what I learned in school and in previous internship experiences. There is a level of transparency that allows for a diverse workload to be transferred from position to position. Most of my experience is in Digital Marketing, so it was refreshing to see different opportunities to work as a marketing professional. I attended and stayed informed on events and press releases related to building energy performance and new energy-efficiency policies within the DMV area. It was nice to attend these events with the Director and take in the information firsthand and get a better understanding of the people who work within this field. This was a side of marketing that I was not exposed to previously; understanding the networking and business side of this profession was something that I lacked.

Sustainability DMV Montgomery County

One of my strengths prior to joining Baumann Consulting was content development, specifically researching and blog writing. When I first joined the Baumann team this was an area that was underutilized due to the time restraints as a small business in an ever-growing industry. Since I voiced my interest in this area, the Marketing team had no issues providing me with many opportunities to help bolster our content and in tandem allow me to get a better understanding of the services we provide and the reasoning behind why they are important in helping create a carbon-neutral future. As someone who has always had an innate interest in sustainability and even previous work within this field, working in the A/E/C industry gave me a new perspective and appreciation for something I previously was uninformed about. Even since the beginning of my internship, this industry has made incredible developments on a local, national, and international scale as it tackles the forefront of the sustainability world.

As my internship drew to a close, the marketing team internally was prepared to offer me a full-time position within the company. Joining full-time allowed for a lot of personal development, both professionally and personally. Many of the obstacles I faced previously after graduating from university involved stability, and that is just what I found at Baumann Consulting, from the people, culture, and work.  The company offers a lot of individual growth opportunities, and many of the people that work at Baumann have plenty of life and worldly experiences each bringing a unique perspective to the office. I have met lovely people at Baumann, some have moved on to other companies, but nevertheless, we keep in touch. As a small business, it is essential to have a tight-knit group of dedicated workers to support you in your role which is precisely what I found at Baumann Consulting.
