ATC Tower Klay Kaserne Wiesbaden

Baumann Consulting is providing LEED Consulting, Energy and Daylight Modeling, and Commissioning services (including Building Enclosure Cx) for the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower located on a secured military compound.

The construction of the new air traffic control tower is a replacement for the existing deficient control tower on the Clay Barracks in  Wiesbaden, Germany. The new seven-level tower will reach a height of approximately 100 ft (31 m) and is connected to an existing building, which is considered a cultural monument and comes with its unique set of requirements.  In addition, the adjoining areas and part of the hangar building will be upgraded to mitigate safety deficiencies.

Assigning the various tasks of LEED Consulting, Energy and Daylight Modeling, and Fundamental, Enhanced, and Building Enclosure Commissioning to one company creates significant synergies. The knowledge gained from one task can be applied to the other, which avoids the loss of information and with that increases quality. For example, control issues determined during the energy modeling can be directly utilized for the development of functional performance tests.

Another example is the synergy between energy modeling and daylight simulation.  Reducing the window-to-wall ratio has a positive impact on energy efficiency but reduces daylighting in the space. Combining the performance evaluation streamlines the process to find the optimum balance.

As part of the building enclosure commissioning, the Baumann team will review drawings for items such as potential water infiltration and thermal bridges. Baumann then leverages these findings to advise the clients on the best strategies for enhancing overall enclosure performance.
