At 16 stories above grade, Alpha Rotex is the crown jewel of Quartier Alpha. It is located on the western edge of Gateway Gardens, an impressive new development project adjacent to the Frankfurt International Airport. Gateway Gardens provides a sustainable, mixed-use hub. It is one of the first districts in Germany to be certified under the DGNB German Sustainable Building Council standard.
Alpha Rotex had to be built and operated in accordance with the rigorous specifications of the German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV). The building achieved a reduction in energy demand by approximately 39% compared to the baseline according to ASHRAE 90.1 – 2007.
In addition to LEED consulting, energy modeling, and commissioning, Baumann provided the following services as part of the performance modeling:
- Performed CFD (computational fluid dynamics) studies of the 8-story winter gardens and developed the control strategy for the louvers to meet the thermal requirements through natural ventilation
- Developed performance models to ensure occupant comfort to verify that thermal comfort profiles are met
The project achieved the LEED for New Construction (LEED NC) certification at the Gold level.
