Washington, D.C., July 2014.

The District of Columbia has the ambition to become “the greenest, healthiest and most livable city in the nation”. By 2032, it aims to cut citywide energy use by 50%, and increase use of renewable energy to make up 50% of its total energy supply.

Since 2012, Baumann Consulting is helping the District to remain on track for achieving its goals by providing independent third-party evaluation services for the energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives provided by the DC Sustainability Energy Utility (SEU).

“We are thrilled to help measure the effectiveness of the DC SEU program,” says Kindra Lam, Project Consultant. “The District of Columbia’s sustainability policies are a shining example of how a city can reduce costs for its citizens and businesses, immediately improve the local economy, and pave the way for a better future.”

The DC SEU helps District residents, businesses, and institutions save energy and money through energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. Led by the Sustainable Energy Partnership and under contract to the District Department of the Environment, the DC SEU is committed to environmental preservation, community engagement, and economic development.

Under contract to Tetra Tech, the lead evaluation firm, Baumann Consulting serves as the go-to boots-on-the-ground team responsible for coordinating and conducting onsite project evaluation efforts. For each of the 71 site visits completed in 2014, Baumann Consulting staff members traveled to the site, conducted interviews, inventoried and verified the installed technologies, and documented findings.

Through our evaluation efforts, Baumann Consulting interviewed a wide array of DC citizens and business owners. The dialogue provided Baumann Consulting an experiential understanding of how Washingtonians use, think about, and save energy, and provided homeowners and businesses an opportunity to learn about energy efficiency. In addition to the accounting and educational benefits, this practice provides transparency to the public.

Baumann Consulting looks forward to building upon its EM&V experience by continuing to analyze, monitor and verify the energy efficiency policies that continue to sweep across the country, improving the bottom line of both residents and businesses.
